5 Tricks to Preventing Dry Skin this Fall

While you’re enjoying pumpkin-flavored everything and the warm smell of cinnamon, your skin is transforming right along with the change of the season from summer to fall. You may notice that it is a bit drier than before or feeling rough and brittle. Here are our best tips for helping your dry skin this fall.

Tips for Preventing Dry Skin

1. Don’t Be Afraid of a Cool Shower.

Though it’s understandable that after a long day exploring the cool outdoors during the fall months you’d want to hop in a nice hot shower afterward. But hot showers, or extended warm showers wash away the natural oils in the skin. Once you step out of the shower, your skin will feel dry and rough. If you can’t handle a cool shower, you can try a warm five-minute shower to wash your skin with a moisturizing body wash.

2. Moisturize

Everyone knows that you have to moisturize in order to remedy and prevent dry skin. Yet, oftentimes we aren’t moisturizing at optimal times. Right after a shower or bath is when you should moisturize to lock in the natural moisture you still have left on your skin, and avoid losing more as your skin dries. Also, apply moisturizer again before bed and whenever you experience dryness.

3. Avoid Harsh Soaps.

Soaps and body washes that are pumped with chemicals can completely strip the skin of its natural oils. Even though they can get rid of bacteria and dirt, they also obliterate your body’s natural moisturizer. Avoid these soaps and instead, use softer cleansers that moisturize while cleaning. There are plenty of natural cleansers out there that still smell great and don’t harm your skin.

4. Use a Humidifier.

Humidifiers aren’t just for when you’re sick. They’re also a great way to bring moisture into a room when the cool fall air whisks it all away. With a bit of moisture in the air, your skin is less likely to dry out. This is especially true for nights when your skin is prone to losing its moisture. Before bed, pull out the humidifier and moisturize the air. Your skin will thank you in the morning.

5. Apply Sunscreen When Going Out.

Even though it isn’t summer, a time when the sun is unobstructed and provides ample amounts of heat, it is still out and raining down its ultraviolet rays and radiation. Despite the time of year or weather, our skin is always being bombarded with radiation during the day. This radiation has a nasty effect on our skin, including causing it to dry out. This can lead to wrinkles, brown spots, dry skin, and more. To avoid these side effects of the sun, apply sunscreen before you go out each time. Shop around a little bit to find sunscreen that also works as a moisturizer. This will give you a double dose of moisture and work overtime to prevent your skin from becoming dry and aged.
