Do I Still Need Makeup If I Get Cosmetic Skin Treatment?

Cosmetic skin treatment is the ultimate way to achieve the healthy glowing skin you’ve always wanted. While there are various treatment options, they are all deployed as tactics in the fight against problematic skin conditions. But once you’ve received cosmetic skin treatment, is makeup necessary? In order to answer this question, we first need to establish the uses and reasons for makeup.

As everyone knows, the use of makeup is commonly used to enhance one’s own beauty– in other words, to give our overall style a little extra flair. It, however, can also be used to mask unwanted signs of certain skin conditions. These conditions can range from moderate and severe acne to deep wrinkles and dark spots. Many sufferers, men and women alike, use makeup as a quick fix even though it only affects the look of the condition and not the underlying cause.

Based on these two reasons, let’s explore the use of makeup after treatment. There are dozens of different cosmetic skin treatments available. This includes microneedling, chemical peels, and laser/light therapy, each of which affects the skin differently.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a procedure in which tiny needles are used to prick the skin, causing micro-injuries. These injuries force the skin to produce new collagen and skin tissue, creating a new layer of healthy skin.

Can I Wear Makeup After Microneedling?

Since microneedling temporarily damages the skin in order for new skin to grow, the skin’s general defenses are down. The application of makeup could further irritate the skin and even cause infection depending on the makeup’s ingredients.

Will I Need Makeup to Cover the Effects of Microneedling?

Common side effects of microneedling include minor scarring and redness. These side effects are temporary and may not be noticeable, so even if it were safe to apply makeup, you wouldn’t need to. As far as the effectiveness of this procedure, microneedling is said to provide suitable results after several treatments. So if you’re willing to put your faith in this skin treatment and stick with it, you may find yourself choosing to go all-natural.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a solution made up of various chemicals that are applied to the face to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots and acne. This solution causes the skin to blister and eventually peel away. Once the skin is peeled, it leaves room for new skin to grow in its place.

Can I Wear Makeup After a Chemical Peel?

Similar to microneedling, after the procedure is finished, the skin needs time to heal. The application of makeup can slow, if not reverse the healing process.

Will I Need Makeup to Cover the Effects of Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels often leave behind the look (and feel) of sunburned skin which soon leads to scaliness. While some may see this as unsightly, applying makeup can do more harm than good. Nonetheless, within 3 to 7 days, the results of the procedure will be visible and the use of makeup will be purely for cosmetic purposes.

Laser/Light Therapy

Light or laser therapies are treatments that involve passing focused beams of light at varying wavelengths over the skin to promote collagen growth or to destroy pigmentation cells to correct dark spots.

Can I Wear Makeup After Laser Therapy?

Luckily, laser therapy typically affects the deep layers of the skin, so the epidermis (top layer) is not damaged. Therefore, your skin is free to receive your daily application of makeup.

Side Note: This does not apply to laser resurfacing treatment. Laser resurfacing DOES affect the top layer of the skin; therefore makeup should NOT be worn after this procedure.

Will I Need Makeup After Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy often leaves the skin with a red tint for several days. You may find this to be annoying and want to apply makeup to cover it up. In any case, laser therapy is one of the most effective cosmetic skin treatments available, so once you’ve completed treatment, wearing makeup will be a matter of choice rather than necessity.
