Best Sunscreen for Eczema This Spring Break

With Spring Break right around the corner, many of us are amping ourselves up and preparing for nice, long (socially-distanced) days at the beach. Before we begin posting our Instagram marathon of sandy snapshots and beachy video clips, we’ve got to whip out the sunscreen. Yet, for those who suffer from eczema, choosing the right sunscreen isn’t all fun and games. We must be careful what we apply to our skin or risk causing a flare-up, and who wants to deal with dry, itchy, and sometimes painful skin during Spring Break? Whether you battle eczema on your hands, face, or anywhere else, here are the best types of sunscreens for any type of eczema this Spring Break.

1. SPF 30 or Higher

The sun can be rather brutal on eczema-prone skin, so it’s important to find a broad spectrum sunscreen that has a high SPF. SPF is the measurement used to determine the level of protection from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. UVB is the type of radiation emitted by the sun that is responsible for sunburning and sun-damaged skin that can lead to skin cancer.

While UVB is the most damaging, we are more exposed to UVA, making it the most problematic. That’s why it’s a good idea to find a sunscreen that gives you protection across the spectrum against all types of UV radiation. Broad spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen with SPF 30 offers significant protection and will keep eczema-prone skin safe from being scorched and sun-damaged by harmful rays and minimizes the risk of a flare-up. Higher SPF is ideal if you’re spending significant time outside and remember to apply every two hours.

2. A Sunscreen That Contains a Natural Moisturizer

Nothing can cause a flare-up faster than dry skin. So the last thing you want is a sunscreen that leaves you dry and brittle. Luckily, there are many different types of sunscreen products that include natural moisturizers like aloe vera and plant-based oils like grapeseed oil. It’s even better to find a moisturizer that offers SPF so that you get the benefits of both. However, it’s also a good idea to apply a moisturizer then a sunscreen to add extra moisture. Talk to your dermatologist about which lotion and sunscreen are right for you. Some sensitive skins will need to avoid specific ingredients.

3. UV Filter That Is Mineral-based

Mineral-based sunscreens are perfect for eczema sufferers. When sunscreen is made from certain minerals like zinc oxide and titanium oxide, it instantly becomes non-irritating. Thanks to these natural ingredients, eczema-prone skin can easily absorb sunscreen without being irritated by chemicals or other harsh ingredients. Again, you’ll want to confirm what is right for you by speaking with your dermatologist.

4. Approved by the National Eczema Association (NEA)

A stamp of approval from the organization created specifically for you is a great way to know you are using the right sunscreen for your eczema. Any sunscreen that has the NEA seal has been tested to ensure it is ideal for those with eczema. While you should still speak to your dermatologist, you can rest a bit easier knowing that the NEA recommends that brand of sunscreen.

These types of sunscreen will help you stay clear and comfortable during Spring Break. However, if you want to go beyond sunscreen and are in Cincinnati, Ohio, our experts at The Dermatology Group can offer you the best eczema advice, resources, and treatment available. Give us a call today!
