Don’t Worry About Body Hair During the Holidays. Try Laser Hair Removal

While we may be bundled up for the holidays, that doesn’t mean we forget about shaving. Most of us waste time and energy shaving, waxing, and tweezing, but it may be time to get rid of those razors and take care of that hair permanently! Laser it away! Here’s everything you may need to know about laser hair removal.

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal treatment is in fact a very common cosmetic dermatology procedure used to get rid of unwanted hair. It works by exposing hair follicles to beams of light from a dermatologist’s laser, which destroys the follicles. This procedure is relatively painless and has several benefits.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

Usually, after shaving, tweezing, or waxing, tiny and itchy bumps appear known as ingrown hairs. Sometimes, these bumps come with darkened skin also called hyperpigmentation. With a laser hair removal procedure, hair is removed from the roots, and ingrown hair does not crop up. As new hair grows back, the skin still feels soft and smooth and not irritated or itchy.

No Painful Side Effects

Unlike other hair removal procedures, laser removal is not painful at all. It creates no cuts or bruising like shaving and threading, or scarring from burning like with waxing. Once the procedure is done, your skin feels normal and happy.

Less Time Consuming

Taking time off in the middle of your holiday plans to get rid of unwanted body hair can be a bit strenuous. However, for laser removal, the procedure takes a few minutes to complete, and the results last longer.

Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

Before you go in for your laser treatment, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

  • Do not sit in the sun or get a tan for at least two weeks before the procedure.

  • Avoid topicals that cause photosensitivity. Use gentle moisturizers and lotions.

  • Avoid cosmetic procedures such as dermal fillers, chemical peels, and Botox two weeks before the laser hair removal.

  • On the day of the treatment, go completely clean and freshly showered, meaning no makeup or body creams.

  • The areas to receive treatment should not be waxed or threaded before the procedure. Instead, shave at least 24 hours before the laser treatment to avoid irritation.

Is Laser Hair Removal Right for You?

Laser hair removal is considered relatively safe and painless; however, it is more effective for some and less effective for others. Those with sensitive skin or photosensitivity should avoid laser hair removal. It’s also important to note that laser hair removal tends to be less effective for those with darker pigmented skin.

To determine if laser hair removal is right for you and your skin type, reach out to a licensed dermatologist who will be able to assess your specific circumstances.
