How Dermal Optical Thermolysis (DOT) Can Help Your Skin This Winter

The wonderful thing about modern day cosmetic solutions is that there is always something new to help your skin. Have you heard of DOT, also known as Dermal Optical Thermolysis? This relatively unknown cosmetic treatment has been growing in popularity, and it’s about time we let you in on this hidden gem.

How Dermal Optical Thermolysis Helps Your Skin

What is DOT?

Dermal Optical Thermolysis, is a state-of-the-art micro-ablative skin treatment that uses the highly advanced SmartXide DOT™ CO2 laser system. The SmartXide laser is a brand of the most powerful laser in the cosmetic industry, the CO2 laser. The carbon dioxide laser was invented back in 1964 and over the years, it has come to be one of the most efficient ways to help rejuvenate the skin. Its ability to emit light at varying wavelengths has proven to be extremely useful in creating smooth and youthful skin.

How Does it Work?

The SmartXide DOT CO2 laser system emits pulses of light at different wavelengths that penetrate into the dermis and reacts with small areas of the skin using the laser’s fractional technology. Microbeams of the light essentially creates thousands of tiny perforations in the skin causing the skin to regenerate and produce new collagen. The fresh overload of collagen tightens the skin, smooths it out, and reduces the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and acne scars. Thanks to the many tiny micro-injuries focusing on one particular area at a time, the skin has the ability to heal faster allowing for less downtime than other more aggressive treatments. This technique also makes the procedure relatively painless.

Here’s How It Will Go

Your dermatologist will begin by applying a topical numbing cream one hour prior to the treatment to help reduce any discomfort you may feel. Once you’re numb, the treatment will begin and your physician will use the laser to treat portions of the skin, moving from one area to the next, until all areas are treated.Once finished, you’ll be asked to rest for 25 to 30 minutes. After you have properly rested, the dermatologist will then apply a mixture of skin care solution and moisturizer. Please note that you’ll be asked to arrange for a vehicle to take you home.

What Type of Results Can Be Expected?

For the next week or two, you may experience redness and swelling. It’s important to stay indoors when you can and to wear sunscreen when going out. The results of DOT laser resurfacing may take several months to appear with optimal results at 6 months. But when the results do appear, the difference is drastic. Patients report having significantly reduced appearance of wrinkles and acne scars as well as smooth and youthful-looking skin.
