Summer is the perfect time for fun in the sun. Swimming, days at the beach, and showing more skin — these awesome aspects of summer are great for most, but for those with rosacea, they can be triggers for a flare up. Luckily, your summer doesn’t have to be ruined. We’re going to show you the best ways to protect your skin with rosacea in the summer.

How to Protect Skin from Rosacea

1. Avoid Spending Too Much Time In the Sun

For a large portion of rosacea sufferers, flare ups are triggered by too much sunlight. That’s because the sun emits harmful ultraviolet radiation. Even those without rosacea can have sun damaged skin or even develop skin cancer caused by the sun’s rays thanks to its ability to mutate our DNA. One could say that rosacea sufferers are the worst off. It’s important that you significantly reduce the amount of time you spend in direct sunlight. If you have to go out, try to stay shaded as much as you can. On especially hot days, it’s best to stay inside.

2. Use Sunscreen with Moisturizer

Refraining from going out on really hot days is not enough. What will really make a difference is wearing sunscreen when you go out. It’s a fact that even if you are in the shade, the ultraviolet radiation is affecting you. Sunscreen will help block some of that radiation from penetrating your skin. Be sure to find a sunscreen that is safe for the face. Some sunscreens may have ingredients that further irritate your skin. 3. Wear Protective Clothing

It seems lately, people wear hats and sunglasses to look cool, and often forget that some people actually use these “accessories” for their functionality. While it may look amazing, you must not forget to wear your hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from a flare up. Fall in love with sunhats and wide glasses, as these can offer the protection you need.

4. Avoid Trigger Foods

Summertime is also a great time to try fun new foods, but spicy foods have been known to cause flare ups. We highly recommend you avoid these foods and eat more fruits and veggies. However, pay attention to everything you eat. Even certain healthy foods can cause a flare up. It may help to keep an eating journal nearby, so you can easily jot down foods/drinks that are triggers.

5. Avoid Wearing Heavy Makeup

Similar to an acne breakout, rosacea can flare up after a night of heavy makeup-wearing. This isn’t to say that all makeup can be dangerous. Certainly not; however, if you use large amounts of foundation, keeping your skin from being able to “breathe,” this can trigger a flare up. During the summer months, try using a lighter makeup.
