Identifying and Treating Common Cysts
There are dozens of types of cysts that harass all kinds of people. Before you begin to panic about that new bump appearing out of nowhere, let’s talk about eight kinds of cysts that are common, how they are treated and ideally which ones you have to worry about.
What is a Cyst?
A cyst is a closed sac found underneath the skin that is filled with a substance. Depending on the type of cyst, that substance can be hard, soft, or even a liquid.
Types of Cysts
- Acne Cyst – Unlike typical acne, acne cysts are formed when the pores of the skin become blocked, causing inflammation and eventual infection. Depending on the severity of the condition, people may turn to antibiotics to control inflammation. Others may try prescription strength facial washes and creams to unclog the pores.
- Breast Cyst – Often painful, breast cysts appear anywhere on the breast and are filled with fluid. Contrary to most women’s fears, these cysts are typically not cancerous and are known to go away on their own. However, they can be drained if the pain becomes unbearable.
- Chalazion Cyst – This little bugger grows slowly within the eyelid and develops when the tear ducts (meibomian glands) are blocked. They usually go away on their own in a few weeks. For those who want faster results, you can try a warm compress on the eye. Or, you can consult a doctor for prescription ointments.
- Colloid Cyst – These are benign cysts (non-cancerous) containing jelly-like brain substances that form within the ventricles of the brain. These cysts aren’t always symptomatic but when they are, symptoms include headaches, memory lapses, or vertigo. Doctors recommend having these cysts removed as their presence may cause blockage of cerebrospinal fluid.
- Ganglion Cyst – Ganglion cysts are benign sacs that are filled with liquid and can usually be found near a joint, most commonly the back of the wrist. It’s not usually painful nor is there any real threat to one’s health. Some people notice that their cysts disappear in a few years while others may opt for surgical removal for cosmetic reasons.
- Ovarian Cysts – This is one of the most common cysts affecting women. They are typically formed during the complicated time of ovulation. Read here to learn how and why ovulation affects the growth of cysts. Certain hormonal birth control pills can minimize the risk of developing cysts. There’s also the option to have the cysts surgically removed, yet they often go away on their own.
- Pilar Cysts – Pilar cysts are fluid-filled cysts that develop just under the skin of the scalp and are typically benign. These are yet another kind of cyst that will disappear over time. However, if they grow too large they can become uncomfortable or unsightly. At this point, many people opt for surgical removal.
- Sebaceous Cysts – These cysts are typically found on the face, neck, or torso. They are benign and rarely cause pain, although they grow slowly over time and can cause emotional turmoil. Most people do not treat sebaceous cysts unless they grow on the face and make the patient feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. If this is the case, then the cyst can be surgically removed.
As you can tell, the most common cysts aren’t usually painful and are rarely life-threatening. Treatment is often not necessary and most will disappear if given enough time.
