What Are the Latest Fillers and How Do They Differ?

Fillers have become a popular go-to cosmetic dermatology treatment for wrinkles, fine lines, and drooping skin. Fillers have been around for years and are a viable alternative to the areas Botox isn’t approved to be used. There’s a wide range of fillers on the market, but which are the latest, and how do they differ?

Let’s break it down.

What to Know About Filler Treatments

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers use synthetic versions of natural substances to “fill” the skin eliminating wrinkles and folds and adds volume to the treated areas. The most common ingredient in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is what we consider the key to the fountain of youth. Technically speaking, hyaluronic acid is a gooey substance that appears in multiple parts of the body. Any part of the body that requires moisture typically has a high concentration of hyaluronic acid; joints, eyes, and of course, the skin. Hyaluronic acid tends to disappear from our bodies over time, leading to joint pain, dry eyes, and dry, wrinkling skin. Yet, with injectable dermal fillers, hyaluronic acid can be restored and recreate a youthful look.

Another go-to dermal filler ingredient is Poly-L-Lactic acid. Unlike hyaluronic acid, PLLA is a synthetic ingredient that triggers a reaction in the body to create full and renewed features. PLLA stimulates the production of collagen at the injection site. Similar to hyaluronic acid, collagen renews the skin, giving you a youthful look. However, collagen is a protein responsible for the elasticity and bounciness of our skin. Collagen disappears as we age, but PLLA-based dermal fillers can boost collagen production to help rebuild and create new healthy skin cells.

Now that we know a bit more about dermal filler types, let’s take a look at two of the most popular fillers on the market and how they stack up against one another.

Juvederm

Juvederm is one of the most popular dermal filler brands on the market. This particular brand has a large collection of dermal fillers that utilizes hyaluronic acid with a mixture of lidocaine (a numbing agent). Juvederm can be used to treat volume loss, chin augmentation, reduce wrinkles, and plump lips.

Sculptra Aesthetic

Sculptra is a name brand filler that uses Poly-L-Lactic acid to stimulate collagen to restore the integrity of the skin and reduce the appearance of deep folds and wrinkles on the face and chin. Focusing on replacing lost collagen, Sculptra can successfully restore your youthful look and even create smoother and plump skin.

Key Differences Between Sculptra and Juvederm

Both Sculptra and Juvederm are great options when choosing a dermal filler that’s right for you. However, there are a few key differences between the two. Namely, Sculptra uses PLLA to stimulate collagen, while Juvederm relies on hyaluronic acid. Another significant difference is that Juvederm has specially formulated dermal fillers for each area of the face. Sculptra, however, has one product for complete treatment. One final difference between the two is that Juvederm can be used as a lip filler while Sculptra cannot.

Which One Do You Choose?

This depends on what is most important to you. If you’re looking to have plump lips, then Juvederm is the way to go. But if you want an all-in-one option without needing to shop around, Sculptra might be what you’re looking for.

It’s best, however, to get a recommendation from a licensed professional. If you’re in Cincinnati, Ohio, then you’re in luck because our experts at The Dermatology Group can offer advice and resources. Give us a call today!
