What To Do About Your Hyperhydrosis This Fall

Everyone sweats, but for some people, excessive sweating can be a problem. It’s called hyperhidrosis, and it can be difficult to deal with. Having hyperhidrosis in the fall, however, can prove to be even more difficult and noticeable. Here are a few tips on getting through the fall months with hyperhidrosis.

1. Avoid Heavy Coats

Even though it’s only fall, those late November days can get quite chilly. But if you can avoid wearing a heavy winter coat, do so. While winter coats keep you warm, they also do a great job of trapping heat and not allowing your skin to breathe. This can cause anyone to sweat, but in those with hyperhidrosis, the likelihood of sweating profusely is drastically increased. Instead of going with the big, bulky coat, try out a thick jacket and a breathable sweater underneath. This may help the air flow without leaving you shivering in the cold.

2. Wear Layers on Cold Days

Layers can be a good thing on cold days. As we mentioned, you want to avoid suffocating your skin. So wearing multiple layers of clothing without a coat or jacket can keep you comfortably cool without sweating too much. That’s not to say that you won’t sweat a bit. You almost certainly will, but wearing layers is a good way to limit the amount of excess sweat as well as conceal it as you go on about your day.

3. Carry Extra Clothing

There’s nothing more embarrassing than being at work or at school and noticing sweat stains on your clothing. It’s a great idea to carry around an extra shirt and pair of socks so you can change if you ever feel uncomfortable. You may even have occasions where the sweat stains aren’t appearing, but you feel the sweat, and it’s becoming a nuisance. You can put on a fresh shirt or pair of socks and continue your day comfortably.

4. Customize Your Treatment Plan

Most people aren’t aware of the fact that you can always customize or change your hyperhidrosis treatment plans. If you’re on a particular medication and you notice that its effect is not what you anticipated, you can have a discussion with your doctor to change or correct your current plan.

This may very well be the case with hyperhidrosis in the fall. During the spring and summer months, you may notice that you have to up your dosage to combat the amount of sweating. If you notice that you sweat less in the fall or winter months, it’s perfectly reasonable for you to want to lower the dosage or make other changes to that plan.

If you choose to make such changes, discuss this with your doctor first. We do not condone making medical decisions on your own, especially when you have pre-existing health conditions.
